Haitian Etiquette

“That’s why we share
All we have with you
Though there’s little to be found
Cause when all you have is nothing
There’s a lot to go around.”

-       Prince of Egypt, “Through Heaven's Eyes”

Haitian Etiquette

“You’ll take my bed
And I’ll sleep on the floor.”
You look surprised.
“That’s not a suggestion. “
You’ve never seen this before?

You are my guest.
I can only give you my best.
Show you around
Pay for your meals
Do all that relieves stress

Don’t be afraid
To ask for anything.
“I don’t want to be a burden, I –”
I don’t want to hear it.
Don’t get up for a thing
Learn to relax and sit
Feel comfortable
When you’re in my home
For these few days
Throw your worries
Onto me
Because if you worry
How can I be happy?

This is Haitian Etiquette
Rules written long before my time
You give the very best
To every guest
So their stay is
Lovely and without worry
And they can get lost in time.
