Lonely in a Crowded Room

Lonely in a Crowded Room

Everyone is alone here
Everyone is looking for someone
That will look at them tonight
Even if it's only a dazed glaze
After having a bit too much
They’ll accept the intoxicated breath
Just to be touched

We all want to be wanted …

Just to feel like
The big city hasn’t
Swallowed them whole
Just to feel for one night
To notice their soul
They’ll clasp desperately to
The stranger's hand
Grabbing for something more

Because everyone’s alone tonight
Everyone will leave with someone
Who they will probably never see again
Because although their act is not a sin
They will feel guilty
For revealing and engaging so deeply
With someone they will
Only embrace temporarily

Everyone’s alone tonight
From the tipsy politician
Crumbling under the burden of the crowd
To the lower levels kissing up
Sniffing for status like stray hounds

Everyone’s alone tonight
From the richest people
In the room
Who hide their insecurity with wealth
To me
The poor philosopher in the corner
Who studies everyone else
To avoid looking at himself

Everyone’s alone tonight …
