Carelessness

Carelessness

I need to protect myself
Or I’d be taken ‘vantage of
So I hope I’m not misjudged
When I tell you I don’t give a fuck

Hope you do not think me evil
As I pass you by
It’s how I preserve my good
You must be sacrificed

I’ll ignore the wound
Like an apathetic surgeon
Like hypocritical politicians
I’ll let the ghettos worsen
Like an absentee father
Who rarely sends a check
Like my unrequited lovers
Who’ve never felt it back

Like Americans prior a foreign catastrophe
I won’t mind that you’re poor
Like private neighbors after a tragedy muttering,
“That went on next door?”

Like the professional teacher
Silent to the student bruised
Like the too kind companion
Who lets her friend get used

Like the person in the back of the group
Who knows they shouldn’t be there
Like all of you
I’ll simply not care
