The Civilized N -

The Civilized Nigger

Many people won't
Look past the title
They'll feel uncomfortable
The words mean too much
The label is loaded
"You could have
Said it a different way,"
They will say.

But that´s how I really feel.
“You shouldn´t
Feel that way.”
Then how should I feel
How should I react
To what they say?

Why should I continue to
Accept intolerance, bigotry
And close-mindedness?
“I´m sure they didn’t
Mean it that way.”
Then why did they say it?
And what if they did?
If the same thing keeps occurring
What conclusion am I to draw?

The same people who
Won´t look past the title
May be the same ones
Who focus on the names
Of applicants on the resume
“Will he fit into the company culture?”
They probably ask themselves.
“What´s his religion?”
“Where did he grow up?”
“What school did he go to?”
“What did his parents do?”

I don’t think I´m
Too sensitive.
I think you have to
Be quite tough
To deal with the
Stupidity of others
On a day to day basis.

I don´t think
I´m overreacting.
I think the reaction your assessing
Is from years of suppression.

And I am not sorry
That it had to come out this way
I am not sorry that
It makes you uncomfortable
But I do feel sorry for you
Because I see that you´ll
Never leave your bubble
And you´ll never
Truly read the individual stories
That people have
Behind their title
