Thoughts Before Dying ( Originally Untitled )
If today was your last day,
I ask you,
“What would you say”
Would you hug
Your dearest relative
Would you cry and complain
Would you believe
In the afterlife
Would you wonder
Where you’d go
Would you find that special someone
And made sure that they know
The feelings
You held so deep
What you were afraid to say
Would you spend the day walking
Because you’ve always felt
Constrained in your car
Maybe play ball with your kids
Call work
Take the day off
Ask your wife
To marry you
She’d laugh at the humor
Would you count
All the fluffy clouds
And wonder
“Where have you been”
Stand before
The crashing waves
And ponder
“Has it really been…”
Years since
I’ve done this
I must have
Just turned thirteen
When life was
Still fresh and new
“Was it a dream…”
Was life really
As good as I think
Did I stress
When I was thirteen
Did I imagine life
As I do now
Now that it seems
To be over
Then did I ever
Stop and ask “How?”
And “Why” and
All those other questions
Did I take the time
To love my life
Not focus on reaching
A destination
That seems to have
Lead me nowhere
Where has it all gone
And where was I
When it happened…
